The fuel-prices.eu data desk

The data desk is the team and the pipeline behind every price report on this site. It is not a pen name for a person: the articles are generated from fixed sentence templates and figures computed from stored price data, and the desk is responsible for the templates, the rules and the corrections.

What the desk is responsible for

The desk defines which price categories are used, how a daily national average is computed, when a movement is worth an article and when it is not, and which sentence may be used for which event. It approves every template before a language is allowed to publish, and it is the address for corrections. The rules themselves are public: how we calculate.

Which sources we work from

For Romania, the prices come from Monitorul Prețurilor Carburanților, the public price monitor run by the Consiliul Concurenței, where station operators report their pump prices. We collect them every two hours and keep every reading, which is what lets an article be checked against the data it was written from.

For France, the prices come from Prix-carburants.gouv.fr, the public price monitor run by the Ministère de l’Économie, des Finances et de la Souveraineté industrielle et numérique, where station operators report their pump prices. We collect them several times a day and keep every reading, which is what lets an article be checked against the data it was written from.

For Italy, the prices come from Osservaprezzi Carburanti, the public price monitor run by the Ministero delle Imprese e del Made in Italy, where station operators report their pump prices. We collect them once a day and keep every reading, which is what lets an article be checked against the data it was written from.

For Spain, the prices come from Geoportal de Hidrocarburos, the public price monitor run by the Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica y el Reto Demográfico (MITECO), where station operators report their pump prices. We collect them several times a day and keep every reading, which is what lets an article be checked against the data it was written from.

For BE, Bulgaria, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, HR, Hungary, IE, LT, LU, Latvia, MT, the Netherlands, Poland, SI, Slovakia and Sweden, the prices come from the Weekly Oil Bulletin, published by the European Commission, Directorate-General for Energy (DG ENER). The bulletin gives one national average per fuel, reported by each EU Member State; it does not list individual stations. We import it once a week and keep every bulletin value, which is what lets an article be checked against the figure it was written from.

How to reach us

If a figure looks wrong, write to us with the article and the date. We keep every reading behind an article, so a claim can be checked rather than argued about.
