# Fuel price gaps at EU land borders

How much less a tank of petrol or diesel costs on the cheaper side of 27 land borders between EU countries, from the national average pump prices in the European Commission’s Weekly Oil Bulletin. These are national averages, not prices at the border; for station prices at four crossings, see Live near the border.

## Methodology & caveats
- What is compared. For each land border between two EU countries, the national average pump prices of the same week, taxes included, for Euro-super 95 petrol and diesel, as published in the European Commission’s Weekly Oil Bulletin (prices of 21 Sep 2026).
- Gap and saving. The gap is the difference between the two prices shown, in euros per litre; the saving is the gap multiplied by 50 litres; “cheaper by” is the gap as a share of the price on the dearer side. Prices are rounded to 3 decimals before subtracting, so every figure can be recomputed from the table.
- National averages, not prices at the border. A national average covers the whole country. Prices near a border can be higher or lower: motorway and border stations price differently, and regional differences can be large. The saving does not include the cost of a detour, tolls or time.
- Non-euro countries. The prices of Czechia, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Sweden are converted to euros by the European Commission at the exchange rate of the bulletin week.
- Temporary tax cuts. Sweden: energy tax on petrol and diesel reduced until 30 September 2026 (Skatteverket) and carbon-dioxide tax reduced until 30 November 2026 (Skatteverket). Spain: reduced hydrocarbon tax rates on petrol and diesel until 30 September 2026 (Real Decreto-ley 18/2026, art. 7, BOE). The bulletin prices of 21 Sep 2026 include these cuts.
- Borders covered (27). Cyprus and Malta are islands, and Ireland’s only land border is with the United Kingdom, so they have no land border with another EU country (Malta’s pump prices are also fixed by the government). Prices of countries outside the EU, such as Switzerland, Norway, the United Kingdom or the Western Balkan countries, are not in the Weekly Oil Bulletin. Sea crossings, including the Øresund Bridge between Denmark and Sweden, are not included.
- Live near the border. Medians of the station prices within 30 km of each crossing, recalculated every 15 minutes from the national live feeds (the same figures as our border crossing pages). Shown only where both sides have live station prices; never mixed with the bulletin figures.
- Updates. The page updates automatically with every new bulletin. For selected borders, weekly diesel gaps over the last 8 weeks are on our border gap pages.
