- Sweden has cut its excise duty on Euro-super 95 petrol from 5,110 SEK per 1,000 litres at the end of 2025 to 1,570 SEK (in force from 6 July 2026 in the Commission’s table), −€0.321 per litre at the ECB rate of 6 July 2026 (European Commission excise duty table, via fuel-prices.eu). Sweden has cut its energy tax on petrol and diesel until 30 September 2026 and its CO₂ tax until 30 November 2026 (Swedish Tax Agency).

## Methodology & caveats
- Source. European Commission, EU Weekly Oil Bulletin: prices with taxes, prices without taxes, excise duties, VAT and other indirect taxes (file “Weekly Oil Bulletin — prices history”), read weekly. The prices with taxes are identical to those on /press/ and /charts/ (checked at every update).
- Base date. 23 February 2026, the last bulletin before 28 February 2026, the same base as our other stories.
- EU average. The Commission’s weighted EU-27 average (weights: each country’s consumption in 2024). We checked that it equals the consumption-weighted average of the 27 national prices. The simple average (27 countries, each counted once) is labelled as such.
- Taxes. Price with taxes − price without taxes. VAT per litre = price × rate ÷ (100 + rate); excise duty and other taxes = the rest. This split is shown only where the VAT rate is verified for both dates.
- Commission figures that do not add up. All figures are the Commission’s, as published, so each one can be checked against its file. Where a figure contradicts the Commission’s own tax tables or the national tax authority, we say so next to it and give the recomputed value: Sweden, Estonia. The EU averages are the Commission’s own; recomputed, the change in EU taxes since 23 February would differ by €0.001 per litre for petrol and €0.002 for diesel.
- Coverage. The table of current taxes lists all 27 EU member states. Change tables, rankings, key numbers and the excise calendar cover 26 of them.
- Labels. Malta fixes its pump prices (so its tax share is not comparable); Sweden has temporary tax cuts; Denmark’s petrol price is net of average discounts. These are national averages: some regions have their own fuel tax rules (for example Spain’s Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla), so taxes there differ.
- What these numbers do not say. They are national averages, not the price at a given station; they are not a forecast; and the price before tax is not a margin: it covers the product, refining, transport, storage, biofuel blending, distribution and retail.
- Updates. The Commission publishes a bulletin each week (Monday prices, usually out on Thursday); this page reads it automatically. Excise dates and rates are the Commission’s; the list of measures ending on 30 September was checked by hand on 26 Sep 2026.
