How do I read the colours on the map?
The map colours every station by the price of a single fuel, Super E10 here, so that the comparison is like for like. The legend under the map reads “Günstig”, “Durchschnittlich”, “Teuer”: green marks the cheapest third of the stations currently loaded on the map, amber the middle third, red the most expensive third, and grey means that station has no fresh price. The thresholds are recomputed from the stations on screen, so they follow the market instead of a fixed price.
Why do two stations a few kilometres apart charge different prices?
Because in this market (Frankreich) each operator sets its own pump price. The tax on a litre is the same for everyone, so what is left to differ is the wholesale price the site paid, its costs and its volume, the brand, and how much competition there is within driving distance. The price card measures both gaps for you: one against the average of the stations around this one, the other against the average of every station we track in this market.
