What the French pump says

B7

Gazole (label B7) is diesel. B10 and XTL (HVO) only for approved engines.

E10

SP95-E10 (E10) is petrol with up to 10 % ethanol. Approved for most petrol cars built since about 2000; check the manufacturer’s list if unsure. Often the cheapest grade at supermarkets.

E5

SP95 (E5) is 95 octane petrol with at most 5 % ethanol. Many supermarkets only sell E10.

E5

SP98 (E5) is 98 octane premium petrol.

E85

E85 Superéthanol only for flex-fuel cars or cars with an approved conversion kit.

LPG

GPLc is LPG (autogas), only for cars converted to it; not every station sells it.

24/24

Automate 24/24: card pump you can use at night and on Sundays. Reported in the official data; we show it as a badge.

Tolls: on most motorways you pay by distance, so leaving and rejoining costs little or nothing extra. At open toll barriers a second charge can apply. Not included in the figures.

03 · Method

How we calculate

  • Prices: official prix-carburants.gouv.fr data (Licence Ouverte 2.0), the same as on our France pages, read again every 10 minutes.
  • Motorway or not: field pop of the official data (A = motorway, R = road).
  • A price counts if it changed in the last 7 days, is still listed in the official data (a fuel that runs out at the pump drops out within hours) and lies between 80 % and 140 % of the national median; prices our checks flag as implausible are left out. Today (Diesel): 6,903 valid, 0 older, 0 outside the range.
  • Routes: OpenStreetMap geometry of the motorways. A motorway station belongs to the nearest of these motorways within 2 km.
  • Net per tank = 50 litres × (route motorway median − station price) − detour cost. Detour cost = 2 × distance × 1.3 × 6.5 l/100 km × price.
  • Supermarket = E.Leclerc, Intermarché, Carrefour (all formats), Super U (all U formats) and Auchan.
  • Exits: OpenStreetMap (ODbL). Chain names: reference file on data.gouv.fr derived from OpenStreetMap (ODbL), used for display only.
