Fuel price cycles — why timing matters in Australia
Australian capital cities are famous for petrol price cycles: prices jump sharply, then fall a little each day until the next hike. In Perth the cycle is weekly, and thanks to FuelWatch’s 24-hour rule, tomorrow’s prices are locked in and published the afternoon before — so with the right timing you can fill up at the bottom of the cycle and save 30–40 cents a litre on a bad-timing fill. Which Australian states are covered?
New South Wales (NSW FuelCheck), Victoria (Servo Saver), Western Australia (FuelWatch), Tasmania (FuelCheck TAS) and the Northern Territory (MyFuel NT) — the states with official open-data price feeds we can republish today. The NSW feed also covers the service stations in Canberra (ACT). Queensland and South Australia also run price-transparency schemes and are on our roadmap, so coverage will keep growing.
How often are prices updated?
It depends on the state. New South Wales is genuinely real-time: FuelCheck reports a price change within seconds of a servo submitting it, and we re-read the feed every 30 minutes. In Western Australia, FuelWatch works on a 24-hour cycle: stations lock tomorrow's prices in the afternoon, so the next day's prices are known in advance. Tasmania and NT feeds report price changes as stations submit them. Victoria is different: Service Victoria publishes the Servo Saver data with a 24-hour delay by design, so the Victorian map shows the official prices of the previous day, not live ones.
Why do Australian fuel prices swing so much?
Most Australian capitals follow petrol price cycles — prices climb sharply, then discount over days or weeks. Perth runs a weekly cycle, so picking the right day can save serious money on a full tank. Our live map shows exactly where today's cheapest servos are.
Where do the prices come from?
Directly from official government sources: NSW FuelCheck (Transport for NSW), Servo Saver (Service Victoria), FuelWatch (Government of Western Australia), FuelCheck TAS (Tasmanian Government, via the NSW OneGov platform) and MyFuel NT (Northern Territory Government).
