How do I read the colours on the map?

Why do two stations a few kilometres apart charge different prices?
Because in this market (United Kingdom) each operator sets its own pump price. The tax on a litre is the same for everyone, so what is left to differ is the wholesale price the site paid, its costs and its volume, the brand, and how much competition there is within driving distance. The price card measures both gaps for you: one against the average of the stations around this one, the other against the average of every station we track in this market.
