In June 2023, Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Botswana agreed to eliminate mobile roaming charges between the four countries. The agreement took effect in August 2023 as part of efforts to create a single network area and contribute to turning Africa into a single digital market.

Inter-Zone Agreements
The EAC One Network Area and the Southern Africa Quad agreement represent steps toward the African Union's goal of a continent-wide single digital market under the AfCFTA framework. Cross-zone roaming remains charged but at reduced rates where bilateral operator agreements exist.
