• What is compared. The median price of each brand: on the date shown, half of its stations were cheaper and half dearer. It is not weighted by sales. Only brands with at least 150 stations reporting a price for that fuel that day are shown, with the number of stations. The gap is the difference between the highest and the lowest brand median, rounded as displayed.
• Data. The price each station reports to its government: in Spain the Geoportal de Hidrocarburos of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition (MITECO), in Italy Osservaprezzi Carburanti of the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy (MIMIT). fuel-prices.eu keeps one price per station per day: the station-level dataset D4 on our research page.
• Shown, not paid. These are the prices displayed at the pump and reported to the ministry. Loyalty cards, app discounts, fleet cards and supermarket vouchers are not included, so what drivers actually pay can be lower.
• Station type not known. The source data do not say whether a station is on a motorway, at a supermarket or in town, so the comparison cannot hold that constant. A brand with many motorway stations may look dearer partly for that reason.
• Brand names. The brand is the name the station reports to the ministry (the sign: “rótulo” in Spain, “bandiera” in Italy). Spelling variants are merged with an explicit, versioned table (version 2026-09-26.1); for example “Bp Oil España” and “Bp” followed by a station name count as BP. Brands of the same group are not merged: Repsol, Campsa and Petronor stay separate, and so do Cepsa and Moeve. A station whose sign names two brands is left out of both.
• Spain. Mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, gasóleo A and gasolina 95 E5, at the daily morning snapshot. The Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla have different fuel taxes and are left out.
• Italy. Self-service prices of regular gasolio and benzina. Stations that sell a fuel only with attendant service (“servito”, dearer) are left out, as in fuel-prices.eu’s national statistics for Italy, and so is Livigno, which is outside the EU VAT and excise area. “Pompe bianche” are independent stations without a brand: shown for comparison, not ranked.
• Dates. Each country is shown at its latest complete day. Spain: the latest daily snapshot. Italy: the ministry publishes each day the prices in force at 8:00 the day before, and a day is complete in our daily record three days later, so the Italian date is about three days behind. In weeks when prices move quickly, the Italian daily figures can lag by up to two days.
• Italian series. The Italian series starts on 23 September 2026: from then on fuel-prices.eu reads the regular self-service price in the ministry file (before, some stations showed a premium diesel or the attendant-service price). The 7-day average appears once at least six days are available.
• Checks. As in the D4 dataset, prices below €0.30 per litre (Italy €1.30) or outside half to twice the national median of that day are treated as reporting errors and left out. Before publication, the calculation was checked against an independent recomputation from the station rows on six dates.
• 7-day average. The average of a brand’s daily medians over the seven days up to the date shown (at least six days needed).
• Source licences. Spain: reused under the conditions of Law 37/2007 (source and date of the last update cited: 27 Sep 2026). Italy: Italian Open Data License 2.0 (IODL 2.0), source MIMIT; this page is not an official publication of the Italian ministry and is not endorsed by it. Only aggregates are published here, no station-level data.
