Official monthly average for September 2026 (Swiss Federal Statistical Office; published on 1 October 2026). € = CHF ÷ the European Central Bank average rate of the month (€1 = 0.9430 CHF). The FSO publishes these as averages of the prices collected for the Swiss consumer price index; it advises against reading the difference between two months as a price trend. Percentages are calculated in Swiss francs from the FSO prices. Euro values use each month’s ECB average rate, so a change in euros also includes the movement of the franc.
01 · Across the border
Is fuel cheaper in Germany, France, Italy or Austria than in Switzerland?
The same month on both sides: the official Swiss average for September 2026 (FSO) against each neighbour’s average of the EU bulletins of September 2026, on a 50-litre fill-up.
In September 2026, unleaded 95 cost more in Germany than in Switzerland:2.21 CHF/L€2.345/L against 2.02 CHF/L€2.142/L, 9.58 CHF€10.16 more for 50 litres.
In September 2026, unleaded 95 was cheaper than in Switzerland in Austria and Italy.
In September 2026, unleaded 95 was also dearer than in Switzerland in France.
In September 2026, diesel was cheaper than in Switzerland in Austria, France and Italy.
Since then, for Germany only: the EU bulletin of 12 October 2026 gives €2.214/L for unleaded 95 and €2.270/L for diesel (average for September 2026: €2.345/L and €2.412/L). There is no official Swiss figure for the following month yet (it is published at the start of November 2026), so we cannot say whether Germany is still dearer.

Swiss francs at the European Central Bank average rate of September 2026 (€1 = 0.9430 CHF, 22 working days). Main border crossings: the cheapest station on the other side
For each crossing: the cheapest unleaded 95 and diesel within 10 km (straight line) on the foreign side, with a price reported in the last 72 hours, compared with that country’s national average. Germany: national average only.
The official Swiss average is monthly: the latest is for September 2026, the next is published at the start of November 2026. Swiss pump prices have changed since then, so we do not calculate savings against an old month.

How to read the chart: the shaded band holds the middle 80% of all months since 1993 (10th to 90th percentile) and the line inside it is the median, both for the prices selected. The percentile counts the earlier months that were strictly cheaper, truncated (not rounded) to one decimal; “record” means that no earlier month was as dear or dearer. Adjusted for inflation: each month × the FSO consumer price index (LIK) for September 2026 ÷ the LIK of that month, so every price is in September 2026 francs; in euros, this adjusted franc price is converted at the ECB average rate of September 2026. A difference smaller than the FSO’s rounding to the centime counts as “at the level of the record”, not as a new record.
National monthly average with all taxes, Swiss Federal Statistical Office (FSO): 405 months, January 1993 – September 2026 (data, free use, source must be cited). Our own calculation.
Methodology
Monthly series: national average pump price with all taxes from the Swiss Federal Statistical Office (FSO), average prices for energy and fuels (free use, source must be cited). The FSO series begins in January 1993 (unleaded 98 and diesel in May 1993); the long chart shows it in Swiss francs from 1993 and in euros from January 1999, the first month with a euro exchange rate. Euro values = CHF ÷ the European Central Bank average CHF rate of that month.
Fuels: the FSO file covers “Bleifrei 95”, “Bleifrei 98” and “Diesel”, in Swiss francs per litre with VAT and taxes, rounded to the centime; it has no LPG series. The FSO describes these as unpaired averages of the prices collected for the Swiss consumer price index (LIK): a change from one month to the next is not a measure of price development, for which the FSO recommends its price indices.
CHF and euros: the FSO publishes prices in Swiss francs; the euro value = CHF ÷ the European Central Bank average CHF rate of that month. The euro series therefore also reflects movements in the franc.
EU comparison: Switzerland is not in the EU Weekly Oil Bulletin. For each month we take the average of the weekly bulletin values (European Commission, CC BY 4.0) for every EU country and the EU weighted average, so that both sides cover the same month; the sources and methods still differ.
Records: marked on the long chart and in its table of the 10 most expensive months; the first month in which the value was reached is counted.
Events: the date given by the linked official source.
