How to read the chart: the shaded band holds the middle 80% of all weeks since 2008 (10th to 90th percentile) and the line inside it is the median, both for the prices selected. The percentile counts the earlier weeks that were strictly cheaper, truncated (not rounded) to one decimal; “record” means that no earlier week was as dear or dearer. Adjusted for inflation: each week × HICP for September 2026 ÷ HICP for the month of that week, so every price is in September 2026 money; weeks after September 2026 are not adjusted yet. Index: Eurostat, harmonised index of consumer prices, all items (prc_hicp_minr, 2025 = 100), reused with acknowledgement of the source. In euros, the inflation-adjusted price in RON is converted at the exchange rate of the latest week.

National average with all taxes, from the European Commission’s Weekly Oil Bulletin (CC BY 4.0): 942 weeks, since 7 January 2008. RON at the exchange rate of each bulletin’s day. Our own calculation.

On the pump in Romania it says (in Romanian):

  • Benzină (Euro 95) = petrol (Euro 95)

  • GPL = LPG (autogas)

The EU label on the pump and on the nozzle is the same as elsewhere in the EU: E5 or E10 in a circle = petrol, B7 in a square = diesel, LPG in a diamond = LPG.

  • Simple average: each station with a price counts once, regardless of how much it sells. It is not the average weighted by the volume sold.
  • The difference from the national average is small: prices differ between chains by only a few hundredths of a Romanian leu per litre. To save money, the individual station matters more than the chain (see the cheapest station above).
  • Petrom and OMV are brands of the same group, but Monitorul Prețurilor reports them separately, and so do we. Chains with prices available for fewer than 20 stations are not shown: Gazprom (12).

How each chain’s prices compare with the national median, day by day

The zero line is the national median for that day. A chain above the line has a higher median price than the national median; one below it has a lower median price. Choose a chain from the list or table to highlight it; its colour is the same throughout.

Hover over the chart, tap it or use the arrow keys to view a day’s data. Hovering over, tapping or clicking a chain’s name (in the list or table above) highlights it.

Source: Monitorul Prețurilor (Competition Council). Period: 24 May 2026 – 27 Oct 2026 (157 days). For each chain with prices available at 20 or more stations on a given day: the chain’s median price minus the national median for that day, both from the day’s last complete reading. The same filters apply as in the chart above (active stations, prices not flagged as suspect, 0.6–1.6 × the day’s median; no 48 h threshold, which cannot be reconstructed for past days). Chains below the station threshold on a given day have no point for that day. Differences in euros are calculated by dividing the difference in RON by that day’s European Central Bank exchange rate. The colours approximate each chain’s main colour (names only, no logos).

06 · Excise duty and price

Diesel excise duty: reduced by 25% in the period 16–31 October 2026, reassessment on 30 October

  1. 16 Oct 2026 Confirmed

The reduction is 25% for 16–31 October. The standard diesel excise duty, 2,804.29 RON per 1,000 L, minus the reduction of 701.07 RON per 1,000 L, gives an effective excise duty of 2,103.22 RON per 1,000 L. Announced on 15 October 2026. Petrol is not part of the mechanism.

Source: Ministry of Finance · excise duty regime

  2. by 30 Oct 2026 Scheduled

Reassessment of the reduction for 1–15 November 2026. The Ministry of Finance reviews the previous period and publishes the reduction for the next half-month. The law allows no reduction, or a reduction of 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25% of the standard excise duty. Result: unconfirmed (not published as of the date of this page).

    Source: Law no. 162/2026, art. 6–8 · Methodology (annex), art. 3, 7, 8

  3. 31 Oct 2026 Scheduled

This is the final day of the crisis period under the law. The Government can extend it by up to 3 months at a time. Without an extension, the reduction mechanism ends and the diesel excise duty returns to 2,804.29 RON per 1,000 L, unless another decision is made. Extension: unconfirmed.

Source: Law no. 162/2026, art. 1 para. (1) and art. 8

Indicative calculation: 701.07 RON per 1,000 L means 0.70 RON per litre excluding VAT, or about 0.85 RON per litre including VAT at 21%, if the reduction is passed on in full at the pump. The breakdown into excise duty, VAT and the remainder comes from the European Commission’s Weekly Oil Bulletin, the only source that publishes the price structure; it is therefore based on average price on Tuesday, 20 October, not on today’s live price.

The diesel excise duty includes the 25% reduction in effect 16–31 October 2026 (see the calendar above). VAT is also applied on top of the excise duty.

    week of 23 Mar 2009

In today’s money: unavailable for Romania (see the method below)

Method (as on the press page): the record is the highest or lowest national average price in the European Commission’s Weekly Oil Bulletin, all taxes included; if a value was reached several times, the first week counts. Zero values and isolated jumps of more than 25% from both neighbouring weeks are excluded (in Romania’s series: none). RON = € multiplied by the bulletin’s exchange rate for that week (RON per €1).

“In today’s money” = price × HICP for August 2026 ÷ HICP for the month of the price (Eurostat, prc_hicp_minr, all items). This is not calculated for Romania, following the approach used on the press page: the bulletin gives prices for countries outside the euro area in €, converted at each week’s exchange rate, so adjusting for national inflation would mix inflation with exchange-rate movements. Section 01 above works differently: it adjusts the RON series for Romanian inflation (HICP Romania), with no conversion to euro, which is why an inflation-adjusted view is available there.

    Methodological note
    • Weekly series: national average pump price with all taxes, reported to the European Commission for Tuesday (that is how Romania reports) and published in the Weekly Oil Bulletin. 942 weeks, 7 Jan 2008 – 19 Oct 2026; 39 weeks without publication (usually holidays) are missing and are not filled in.
    • RON and euros: the bulletin publishes prices in euros; the RON value = the euro value multiplied by the exchange rate used in the bulletin for that week. The RON series therefore also reflects movements in the leu against the euro.
    • Weighted EU average (EU-27): calculated by the European Commission and weighted by each country’s consumption; converted to RON using Romania’s exchange rate for the same week.
    • Live, daily (157 days, since 24 May 2026): the simple average of prices from the final reading each day in Monitorul Prețurilor, using the same active stations as the live page. Prices in euros are converted using the European Central Bank exchange rate for each day.
    • Live price and the European Commission’s Weekly Oil Bulletin: these are two different measurements. The live price is the simple average of the prices listed by filling stations in Monitorul Prețurilor (Romania’s official fuel price register) at the time shown beside it; the bulletin gives the national figure reported to the European Commission for Tuesday, weighted by the station networks’ market shares. The figures refer to different days and use different methods. RON = the € value in the bulletin, converted at the European Central Bank exchange rate on the bulletin date (19 Oct 2026: €1 = 5.3264 RON). The difference between the live price and the bulletin figure is calculated in RON and converted to € at the rate of the more recent date, so the percentage is the same in RON and in €. LPG is also in the Weekly Oil Bulletin, but the Romanian figure there differs a lot from the live station average; so for LPG we show only the live station average, with the time of the reading, and compare it neither with the bulletin nor with other countries.
    • Records: the method described above (“Records” section): the first week in which the value was reached, excluding zero values and isolated jumps of more than 25%; prices “in today’s money” are not calculated for Romania (its currency is not the euro, and the bulletin gives prices in € at each week’s exchange rate).
    • Events use the start dates given in the cited sources; the coloured area shows the period during which each event influenced the market, according to the site’s timeline.
