Methodology & Notes
Why are European fuel prices higher?
The main reason is taxation. EU countries levy significant excise duties and VAT on fuel — typically 40–60% of the pump price is tax. In contrast, US federal and state fuel taxes average around $0.50/gallon (≈ €0.11/L), making up only ~12% of the pump price.
Data sources
EU prices: European Commission Weekly Oil Bulletin (national averages including all taxes, published Thursdays).
US prices: U.S. Energy Information Administration weekly retail survey (national averages including all federal, state, and local taxes, published Mondays).
Exchange rate: European Central Bank daily reference rate.
Octane equivalence
European "Euro 95" (RON 95) is compared against US "Midgrade" gasoline (89 AKI ≈ 93–95 RON). The US uses a different octane measurement system (AKI = Anti-Knock Index), which is typically 4–5 points lower than the European RON rating for the same fuel. US "Regular" (87 AKI ≈ 91 RON) is a slightly lower octane grade than Euro 95.
Unit conversions
1 US gallon = 3.78541 liters. All $/gallon figures use the ECB daily EUR/USD exchange rate (1.1699 on 21 Aug 2026).
