Why are fuel prices so different across Europe?
The main driver is taxation. Excise duties and VAT can make up 50–65% of the pump price in high-tax countries. For example, the Netherlands imposes some of the highest fuel duties in Europe, while Bulgaria has among the lowest. Other factors include refining costs, distribution margins, and government price regulation policies.
