Unlike Czech Republic, Hungary's 1-day vignette is valid only until 24:00 on the same day, not 24 hours from purchase. If you buy at 18:00, it expires at midnight! For evening arrivals, consider the 10-day vignette.
Hungary is the only European country offering county-based vignettes. If you're only visiting one region (e.g., Lake Balaton area), you can buy a cheaper county vignette instead of a national one. Valid for 10 days within a single county.
For transit through Hungary (e.g., Vienna → Belgrade), the 10-day national vignette (~€18) is your best option. The 1-day vignette (~€9) is only valid until midnight – fine if you start early in the morning!
E-matrica covers all Hungarian motorways (M roads) • M0 partially toll-free • Open full EU toll calculator →
Hungary is the central transit hub of Central/Eastern Europe. Most travelers pass through on their way to:
M5 → Röszke border
→ Belgrade, Montenegro, Greece
M4 → Ártánd border
→ Oradea, Cluj, Bucharest
M7 → Letenye border
→ Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik
M3 → Záhony border
→ Uzhhorod, Lviv, Kyiv
Hungary is about 500 km across (Vienna to Romanian border). At motorway speeds, this takes ~4-5 hours. The 1-day vignette (valid until 24:00 same day) is sufficient for direct transit if you start early!
The e-matrica is valid immediately after purchase. You can buy it at the border and drive onto Hungarian motorways right away!
The e-matrica is linked to your license plate. Double-check the plate number AND country code (e.g., "D" for Germany, "A" for Austria). Errors = invalid vignette!
The e-matrica is required on all Hungarian motorways (autópálya - M) and expressways (autóút).
Hungary uses extensive camera networks on all motorways. License plates are automatically checked against the e-matrica database. You will be caught.
If you forget to buy a vignette, you can purchase one within 60 minutes of entering the motorway and avoid a fine. After 60 minutes, fines are automatically issued.
