Where is the cheapest fuel in Europe?
As of 24 Aug 2026, the cheapest petrol (Euro 95) is in Malta at €1.340/L and the cheapest diesel is in Malta at €1.210/L. Prices are updated every week from the EU Oil Bulletin.
Why do fuel prices differ so much between countries?
Taxes are the main reason. Fuel taxes (excise duties and VAT) can make up 40-65% of the pump price. Countries like the Netherlands and Finland have high taxes, while Bulgaria, Poland and Luxembourg have lower rates.
Where does the data come from?
All price data comes from the European Commission's Weekly Oil Bulletin, which collects official national average consumer prices from authorities in each EU member state.
How often are prices updated?
The EU Oil Bulletin publishes new prices every Monday. Our database updates automatically the same day. For live station-level prices in France, Spain, Italy and the UK, data updates multiple times per day.
Weekly fuel price data since January 2005 for all 27 EU member states and the United Kingdom.
