From 1 October to 31 December 2026, Latvia’s temporary excise rate is €490 per 1,000 litres of petrol and €330 per 1,000 litres of diesel. Until 30 September it was €555 for petrol and €396 for diesel. The rates come from amendments to the Law on Limiting the Rise in Petroleum Product Prices, adopted by the Saeima on 24 September (Latvijas Vēstnesis No. 188, 30 September 2026).

What it means at the pump
The cut is €65 per 1,000 litres (6.5 cents per litre) for petrol and €66 (6.6 cents per litre) for diesel. With 21% VAT that is about 7.9 cents less per litre of petrol and 8.0 cents less per litre of diesel, if the pre-tax price stays the same. In the European Commission’s Weekly Oil Bulletin, the Latvian average on 5 October 2026 was €1.962 per litre of petrol and €2.120 per litre of diesel.
How long
The temporary rates apply until 31 December 2026. For diesel a temporary rate (€396) had already applied since 1 April; for petrol the cut is new from 1 October.
A correction in our data
Until 28 September the European Commission’s tax sheet still listed the regular €467 for diesel instead of the €396 set by law, and the state oil-reserve service fee at €91.26 per tonne instead of the €81.26 in force since February. Our price breakdown pages now show the legal values.
