Sweden’s reduced energy tax on petrol and diesel (SEK 0.70 per litre of petrol, SEK 831 per cubic metre of diesel) applied until 30 September 2026. From 1 October, energy tax plus carbon dioxide tax comes to SEK 2.39 per litre of petrol (environmental class 1) and SEK 1,561 per cubic metre of diesel (environmental class 1), up from SEK 1.57 and SEK 1,242 in July–September. The carbon dioxide tax stays reduced until 30 November 2026 (SFS 2026:1226).

What it means at the pump
The increase is SEK 0.82 per litre of petrol and SEK 0.32 per litre of diesel; with 25% VAT that is about SEK 1.03 more per litre of petrol and SEK 0.40 more per litre of diesel, if the pre-tax price stays the same. In the European Commission’s Weekly Oil Bulletin, the Swedish average on 5 October 2026 was €1.589 per litre of petrol (about SEK 17.88) and €2.118 per litre of diesel (about SEK 23.83), at the ECB rate of 5 October.
And from 1 December
The reduced carbon dioxide tax applies until 30 November 2026. From 1 December, under SFS 2026:1227, the tax is SEK 4.79 per litre of petrol and SEK 3,961 per cubic metre of diesel: another SEK 3.00 or so per litre for both fuels, VAT included.
