🇩🇪Go deeper

Next: the gap across the border.

Diesel ~€0.476/l cheaper in Poland right now (weekly bulletin).

Germany: weekly national averages only — no station-level prices yet.

The German figure above is a national average for the week. At the pump, German prices move several times a day: stations typically peak in the early morning and are at their cheapest in the evening, so the same station can differ by 10 cents or more within one day.

Germany's price is high mainly because of tax: energy duty, 19% VAT on top of everything, and the national CO2 price on fuels, which is raised in steps each year. That is why German diesel stays above the EU average even in weeks when oil is cheap.

Drivers near a border routinely fill up in Poland, Czechia, Luxembourg or Austria, where the tax component is lower. Germany has no vignette for cars, but Austria, Czechia, Slovakia and Slovenia do — if you are heading south, budget for that on top of the fuel.
