How to read the chart: the shaded band holds the middle 80% of all weeks since 2005 (10th to 90th percentile) and the line inside it is the median, both for the prices selected. The percentile counts the earlier weeks that were strictly cheaper, truncated (not rounded) to one decimal; “record” means that no earlier week was as dear or dearer. Adjusted for inflation: each week × HICP for September 2026 ÷ HICP for the month of that week, so every price is in September 2026 money; weeks after September 2026 are not adjusted yet. Index: Eurostat, harmonised index of consumer prices, all items (prc_hicp_minr, 2025 = 100), reused with acknowledgement of the source.

Method as on the press page: record = highest or lowest national average price with all taxes in the bulletin; in the event of a tie, the first week counts.

    Methodology
    • Weekly series: national average pump price with all taxes, reported by Luxembourg to the European Commission (a weekly average, according to the Commission’s methodology note for Luxembourg) and published in the EU Weekly Oil Bulletin (Commission’s methodology note for Luxembourg). 1,089 weeks, 3 Jan 2005 – 19 Oct 2026; 49 weeks with no publication (mostly public holidays) are missing and are not filled in.
    • Fuels: the bulletin reports Euro-super 95 (95-octane petrol) and automotive diesel for every EU country; LPG (autogas) comes from the Commission’s price history file of the bulletin and is missing where a country does not report it.
    • EU weighted average (EU-27): calculated by the European Commission and weighted by each country’s fuel consumption. LPG (autogas) comes from the same source (the bulletin’s “Prices with taxes” table).
    • Records: see the “Records” section; the first week in which the value was reached is counted.
    • Events: start date as given by the linked source; the coloured area shows the period in which the event shaped the market (this page’s timeline).

This page uses only the official average that Luxembourg reports to the European Commission each week: it is published under an open licence (CC BY 4.0) and calculated in the same way for every EU country, so the EU ranking, the neighbouring countries and the tax breakdown can all be compared.

Is fuel expensive in Luxembourg compared with the rest of the EU?

In the week of 19 October 2026, Luxembourg ranked 9 out of 27 for petrol (Euro-super 95) and 15 out of 27 for diesel (1 = cheapest). Petrol was 10.2% below the EU weighted average (€1.991/L), and diesel 2.7% below the EU weighted average of €2.139/L.

Is fuel expensive at the moment compared with previous years?

The national average for petrol (Euro-super 95) in the week of 19 October 2026 is higher than in 98.1% of all weeks since 2005 (nominal, not adjusted for inflation). Last time it was this expensive or more expensive: October 2026 (week of 12 Oct 2026). The national average for diesel in the week of 19 October 2026 is higher than in 99.6% of all weeks since 2005 (nominal, not adjusted for inflation). Last time it was this expensive or more expensive: September 2026 (week of 28 Sept 2026). The comparison is in nominal terms and not adjusted for inflation.

Is it worth refuelling in a neighbouring country?

According to the bulletin, none of the neighbouring countries is cheaper than Luxembourg for petrol (Euro-super 95). These are national averages: prices at the border can differ, and the journey there also uses fuel.

What does a full tank cost?

Using the bulletin of 19 October 2026: 50 litres of petrol (Euro-super 95) cost about €89.40, 50 litres of diesel about €104.05 and 40 litres of LPG (autogas) about €38.12. For LPG we assume 40 litres, because a 50-litre LPG tank is only filled to about 80%.

    Is diesel cheaper than petrol?

In the week of 19 October 2026, diesel cost €0.293 per litre more than petrol (Euro-super 95). The excise duty on diesel is 10.45 cents per litre lower than on petrol. The rest of the difference lies in the price before tax: after the taxes in force, €1.357/L is left for diesel against €1.002/L for petrol (our calculation). The chart “Diesel minus petrol (Euro-super 95)” shows the trend.

How much of the fuel price is tax?

In the bulletin of 19 October 2026, taxes made up 44.0% of the price of petrol (Euro-super 95) and 34.8% of the price of diesel: excise duty of €0.526 (petrol) and €0.422 (diesel) per litre and VAT at 17% (European Commission, EU Weekly Oil Bulletin).

How often are the prices updated?

Once a week: the European Commission publishes the Weekly Oil Bulletin a few days after the reference day; the bulletin for the week of 19 October 2026 reached us on 22 October 2026. This page checks every hour whether new data are available.
