What is in the price? Energy tax (fuel duty), carbon price and VAT
1 May – 30 June 2026 ended
First cut in the energy tax, 2026. Energy tax on petrol (Super E5) at 51.41 instead of 65.45 cents per litre, on diesel at 33.00 instead of 47.04 cents per litre, i.e. 14.04 cents per litre less in each case; with 19% VAT, that is relief of up to 16.71 cents per litre. In the bulletin (including market movements): petrol (Super E5) from €2.144/L (week of 27 Apr 2026) to €2.063/L (week of 4 May 2026), diesel from €2.181/L to €2.088/L.
Second cut in the energy tax, 2026. Energy tax on petrol (Super E5) at 51.41 instead of 65.45 cents per litre, on diesel at 33.00 instead of 47.04 cents per litre, i.e. 14.04 cents per litre less in each case; with 19% VAT, that is relief of up to 16.71 cents per litre.
Legal position as at 3 November 2026. ct/L = cents per litre. The energy tax rates are exclusive of VAT; VAT of 19% is also charged on the energy tax.

Carbon price in the fuel price
Since 2021 Germany has had a carbon price on petrol and diesel (Fuel Emissions Trading Act, BEHG). In 2026 the price ranges from €55 to €65 per tonne of CO₂; at the first auction on 1 July 2026 the clearing price was €65. For Germany, the EU bulletin lists the item “Other indirect taxes”; this amount can be checked using the following calculation:

All amounts exclude VAT. The biofuel content is exempt from the carbon price where its sustainability is proven (emission factor 0, § 8 EBeV 2030); the amount is therefore lower than for a litre of entirely fossil-based fuel (15.56 cents per litre for petrol, 17.40 cents per litre for diesel). The calculation assumes the maximum biofuel content specified in the bulletin’s methodology (Super E5: up to 5% ethanol, diesel B7: up to 7% biodiesel) and differs from the bulletin by 0.04 cents per litre for petrol and less than 0.01 cents per litre for diesel. If the actual biofuel content is lower, the carbon price component is slightly higher. Including 19% VAT, the bulletin gives this component as 17.64 cents per litre for petrol and 19.25 cents per litre for diesel.

Methodology
Weekly series: national average pump price with all taxes, reported by Germany to the European Commission for each Monday and published in the EU Weekly Oil Bulletin. 1,090 weeks, 3 Jan 2005 – 26 Oct 2026; 49 weeks with no publication (mostly public holidays) are missing and are not filled in.
Fuel types: According to the European Commission’s methodology note for Germany (original, 2018 version), Germany reports petrol with up to 5% ethanol (E5) for “Euro-super” (95 octane, here “Super E5”) and a fuel with up to 7% biodiesel (B7) for diesel; the actual biofuel content can range from 0 to 5% for petrol and from 0 to 7% for diesel. Super E10 is not mentioned there. The data source is the Fuel Market Transparency Unit (Markttransparenzstelle) at the Bundeskartellamt (market coverage over 70%); the arithmetic mean is calculated from the reported prices. The reference day is Monday.
Pence, pounds and euros: the bulletin publishes prices in euros; in pence, each price = the euro price × the European Central Bank reference rate for the Monday of that bulletin week × 100. Prices per litre are shown as on UK pumps (pence, one decimal); totals such as a full tank are shown in pounds. The pence series therefore also reflects the pound’s exchange rate against the euro.
EU weighted average (EU-27): calculated by the European Commission and weighted by each country’s fuel consumption. LPG (autogas) comes from the same source (the bulletin’s “Prices with taxes” table).

This is the average price on Monday, not a current price at individual petrol stations. The national average for diesel in the week of 26 October 2026 is higher than in 98.9% of all weeks since 2005 (nominal, not adjusted for inflation). Last this expensive or more expensive: September 2026 (week of 28 Sept 2026).
What is the petrol price in Germany?

Why does this page not show prices at individual petrol stations?
For Germany we publish only the official average price that Germany reports to the European Commission. We do not show prices at individual petrol stations for Germany. For some neighbouring countries, such as Austria, France and Denmark, fuel-prices.eu does have prices for individual stations.
Is fuel expensive in Germany compared with the rest of the EU?
In the week of 26 October 2026, Germany ranked 23 of 27 for petrol (Super E5) and 22 of 27 for diesel (1 = cheapest). Petrol was 10.9% above the EU weighted average (€1.954/L), and diesel 7.1% above the EU weighted average of €2.146/L.

Is it worth refuelling in a neighbouring country?
Among the neighbouring countries, petrol (Super E5) is cheapest in Poland according to the bulletin (€1.467/L); a 50-litre fill-up there costs about €34.99 less than in Germany. For diesel, Poland is cheapest (€1.781/L, about €25.84 less for 50 L). These are national averages: prices at the border can differ, and the journey there also uses fuel.
When does the reduced energy tax on petrol and diesel apply?
From 1 October 2026 to 31 December 2026, the energy tax is 51.41 cents per litre for petrol (otherwise 65.45) and 33.00 cents per litre for diesel (otherwise 47.04), a reduction of 14.04 cents per litre, or up to 16.71 cents per litre including 19% VAT. The same cut applied from 1 May to 30 June 2026. The bulletin of 5 October 2026 is the first since the cut took effect; it and the following bulletins show whether the cut reaches the pump in full. Legal basis: § 68 EnergieStG (Energy Tax Act).
What is the carbon price on fuel in 2026?
In 2026 the national emissions trading system has a price range of €55 to €65 per tonne of CO₂ (§ 10 BEHG); at the first auction on 1 July 2026 the price was €65. In the EU Weekly Oil Bulletin, the corresponding item for Germany is “Other indirect taxes”: 14.82 cents per litre of petrol (Super E5) and 16.18 cents per litre of diesel, excluding VAT. The biofuel component is exempt from the carbon price if its sustainability is verified; for fuel with no biofuel content, the calculated amounts would be 15.56 cents for petrol and 17.40 cents for diesel.
What does a full tank cost?
Using the average price on Monday, 26 October 2026: 50 litres of petrol (Super E5) cost about €108.35, 50 litres of diesel about €114.90 and 40 litres of LPG (autogas) about €45.21. For LPG we assume 40 litres, because a 50-litre LPG tank is only filled to about 80%.
Is diesel cheaper than petrol?
In the week of 26 October 2026, diesel cost €0.131 per litre more than petrol (Super E5), even though the energy tax on diesel, at 33.00 cents per litre, is 18.41 cents per litre lower than on petrol (51.41 cents per litre). The difference lies in the price before tax: after the taxes in force, €1.439/L is left for diesel against €1.159/L for petrol (our calculation). How often are the prices updated?
Once a week: the European Commission publishes the Weekly Oil Bulletin with the Monday prices a few days later; the bulletin for the week of 26 October 2026 reached us on 29 October 2026. This page checks every hour whether new data are available.
