How to read the chart: the shaded band holds the middle 80% of all weeks since 2005 (10th to 90th percentile) and the line inside it is the median, both for the prices selected. The percentile counts the earlier weeks that were strictly cheaper, truncated (not rounded) to one decimal; “record” means that no earlier week was as dear or dearer. Adjusted for inflation: each week × HICP for September 2026 ÷ HICP for the month of that week, so every price is in September 2026 money; weeks after September 2026 are not adjusted yet. Index: Eurostat, harmonised index of consumer prices, all items (prc_hicp_minr, 2025 = 100), reused with acknowledgement of the source.

National average including all taxes from the European Commission’s EU Weekly Oil Bulletin (CC BY 4.0): 1,088 weeks since 3 January 2005. Our own calculation.

1 Apr 2013: Week not reported by the European Commission — gap in the chart.

    Methodology
    • Weekly series: national average pump price with all taxes, reported by Italy to the European Commission (a weekly average, according to the Commission’s methodology note for Italy) and published in the EU Weekly Oil Bulletin (Commission’s methodology note for Italy). 1,088 weeks, 3 Jan 2005 – 19 Oct 2026; 50 weeks with no publication (mostly public holidays) are missing and are not filled in.
    • Fuels: the bulletin reports Euro-super 95 (95-octane petrol) and automotive diesel for every EU country; LPG (autogas) comes from the Commission’s price history file of the bulletin and is missing where a country does not report it.
    • EU weighted average (EU-27): calculated by the European Commission and weighted by each country’s fuel consumption. LPG (autogas) comes from the same source (the bulletin’s “Prices with taxes” table).
    • Live prices: the simple average of all petrol stations that reported a price on the day (MIMIT, IODL 2.0, not an official publication of the Ministry); a station counts once per day, with the price recorded that day. The live map can show a slightly different average, because it counts only prices updated in the last 7 days.
    • Records: see the “Records” section; the first week in which the value was reached is counted.
    • Events: start date as given by the linked source; the coloured area shows the period in which the event shaped the market (this page’s timeline).

This is the average price over the week that Italy reports to the European Commission, not a current price at individual petrol stations. The national average for diesel in the week of 19 October 2026 is higher than in 99.7% of all weeks since 2005 (nominal, not adjusted for inflation). This is the average price over the week that Italy reports to the European Commission, not a current price at individual petrol stations. Where do the live prices at the top of the page come from?

From MIMIT (Ministero delle Imprese e del Made in Italy, IODL 2.0): the simple average of all petrol stations that reported a price that day (21,127 stations for petrol, 21,200 for diesel, on 25 October 2026). The EU bulletin further down is the official figure that Italy reports to the European Commission once a week; the EU ranking, the neighbouring countries and the tax breakdown use the bulletin, because it is calculated in the same way for every EU country.

Is fuel expensive in Italy compared with the rest of the EU?

In the week of 19 October 2026, Italy ranked 20 out of 27 for petrol (Euro-super 95) and 21 out of 27 for diesel (1 = cheapest). Petrol was 1.2% above the EU weighted average (€1.991/L), and diesel 4.9% above the EU weighted average of €2.139/L.

Is it worth refuelling in a neighbouring country?

Among the neighbouring countries, petrol (Euro-super 95) is cheapest in Malta according to the bulletin (€1.340/L); a 50-litre fill-up there costs about €33.79 less than in Italy. What does a full tank cost?

Using the bulletin of 19 October 2026: 50 litres of petrol (Euro-super 95) cost about €100.79, 50 litres of diesel about €112.22 and 40 litres of LPG (autogas) about €31.44. For LPG we assume 40 litres, because a 50-litre LPG tank is only filled to about 80%.

In the week of 19 October 2026, diesel cost €0.229 per litre more than petrol (Euro-super 95). The excise duty is the same on both fuels. The rest of the difference lies in the price before tax: after the taxes in force, €1.166/L is left for diesel against €0.980/L for petrol (our calculation). The chart “Diesel minus petrol (Euro-super 95)” shows the trend.

How much of the fuel price is tax?

In the bulletin of 19 October 2026, taxes made up 51.4% of the price of petrol (Euro-super 95) and 48.0% of the price of diesel: excise duty of €0.673 (petrol) and €0.673 (diesel) per litre and VAT at 22% (European Commission, EU Weekly Oil Bulletin).

Once a week: the European Commission publishes the Weekly Oil Bulletin a few days after the reference day; the bulletin for the week of 19 October 2026 reached us on 22 October 2026. This page checks every hour whether new data are available.
